Chicken Soup for the Soul #Days 10 -11

Heehaa it’s Friday, can you say excited….yes the weekend is upon us and I couldn’t contain myself. Regardless of the work day today, tomorrow is Saturday and I can just hang back and relax Whoo-hoo!

Today a good friend took me along to go pick up apparently, the best koeksusters in Cape Town! For those English speaking people out there wondering what the hell a koeksuster is… It’s an Afrikaans traditional dessert/tea time classic, every boer worth her salt, has someone in her family with a fantastic Koeksuster recipe, 9 times out of 10 it’s from Grandma.A golden delicious doughy twister directly sent from heaven, sweet, gooey and soft.

Why did I opt to join him on this obviously temptation filled outing , well because we would be meeting them at Haas Coffee - a really eclectic chic, coffee shop in Cape Town, it can be found on Buitenkant Street in the City Bowl. If you are in the area pop in for a quick cuppa, you will not regret it.

Why is this special you ask, well Haas Coffee is a place that charms and enchants all of your senses.  For me as a Coffee Addict of Note the fresh aroma of roasted and ground coffee beans in the air immediately puts me in a happy mood. I would probably even like it more if I were not on a diet. Why??? Oh my giddy aunt! Their  assortment of decadent baked goods, just looking at them through the display counter window made me salivate like a bloody hungry dog.

I did peruse the menu, which also offered some sumptuous looking breakfasts and lunches, the ambience is also something to note, the background music sets the tone for a chilled out time regardless of whether meeting a client, or an old friend.
Me likey, very mucho.  As I was perusing the menu a flyer on the table grabbed my attention.

A brew claiming to be the world’s strongest cup of coffee, I was intrigued. Aptly named Black Insomnia coffee, it’s predecessor called Death Wish contained 660mg caffeine, Black Insomnia contains a whopping 702mg. I had to try a cup.

Yum Tikka! Whopow that coffee is one for the books, I couldn’t even risk ruining the deliciousness of the coffee by tarnishing it with sugar.  Hmmmm for a moment all was right in the world again.

I guess I have a really high tolerance for caffeine because I felt completely fine,  not even the slightest hint of the jitters, I think that coffee and I might just start a really serious long term relationship.

After the coffee it was back to work and a fairly normal afternoon followed. I had already exceeded my minimum of 3 trips to the gym per week, so I opted to spend some time at my dune instead. I love my dune, it’s big, it’s high and what a view. Living in Hout Bay you are slap bang behind Table Mountain, we also have a small harbour and a long outstretched beach. My dune is closer to the harbour than the swimming beach…I think, I haven’t lived here long and to be honest I don’t know yet.

I happened to find it  my first time out there and just completely fell in love with it. It’s the highest point on that part of the beach and you can always appreciate the view, glorious mountains and a vast turquoise ocean, the beaches here are sandy white.  I come here after work before gym, to have my chill time, my thinking time.  I love people watching, and my spot is the ideal place for that.

Before I knew it, 40min had passed and the sun was starting to go down, I made a unilateral decision that I would rather go for a walk in the vineyard with Harry(My landlord’s Alsatian) than trek off to the gym this late(Rush Hour time for everyone who just came home from work).

I didn’t feel like cooking at all and had some curry leftover from lunch, so I decided to have that instead of cooking. So far this battle has continued to be won, but  today I faltered, twice. I gave into my friend’s plea to try the best Koeksuster in Cape Town – although only one bite I didn’t feel to happy about it later. In the late evening I did also succumb to a craving and had 10 Fruit Pastilles, I discovered the packet in the back of my drawer. I felt so guilty and gross after having them, yet felt to weak not to reach for them once they’d been seen. For me I guess it’s really much better to keep things out of sight and out of mind.

These types of changes and life challenges  really aren’t easy and I honestly can’t wait for it to be over, I just know that without  my snacks I would be totally screwed. It definitely affects you emotionally, obviously my wonderful cycle has also had a hand in my feelings this week and have driven me mental with cravings but still, I hate failing even if just a little.

I suppose it’s how you define success, in my opinion the difference between success and failure is not whether you fail or how many times you fail. The difference is the amount of times you get back on the horse and try again. - this is a marathon after all and by no means a sprint, I see a lot of high high’s and bloody down low’s coming over the course of the next 90 days, I’m just glad that I haven’t completely gone off the rails and binged like a banshee.

Below I have outlined my food day

Day 11 – Saturday

I was home alone today, my landlord has taken a trip to Paternoster, a small town up the coast. This meant that I would need to feed Harry and lock him inside at night. It was for a change, a very pleasant change a glorious sunny day in the Mother City. This to me has been a very rare occurrence and has been the first Saturday in 4 weeks we’ve had sunshine. I fully capitalized on it, went for a 40min hike in the vineyard, played a little with Harry and had some me time next to the dam with Buddha. Yes there is a tiny built dam with a Buddha in my garden. Now that I had taken care of my step goal for the day, I could focus on other things.

I did a little “Spring” clean in my place, did the general washing and decided to give Betty a wash too – for those who don’t know, Betty is my car.

If you aren't aware, South Africa is currently facing one of it's worst droughts ever! So please everyone when washing your cars, do it with a bucket, minimize the hose usage and please do it in the afternoon. If you are like me and wish to take it even further, get yourself a nice scratch relief foam car was, which goes on straight to the dirty car - It feels like you are prepping your car for OPPIKOPPI (The best Music Festival in South Africa - only this time it's not for decoration, and it's not shoe shine.

Not only is this a better way to wash your car (by saving water) It also yields amazing results.

  Behold - Tyre Before

< Tyre After - That's with no scrubbing, FYI.

Get this stuff man.

Friday was one of my closest friend’s in the world’s birthday, my Steph. We’ve been friends for over a decade now, we met in the UK, we worked, lived, partied and traveled Europe together. I’m the kind of freak that will approach you in a public bathroom and ask you a question out right, that’s how we met actually. I had gone to an interview with my cousin in the UK and Steph was assisting the interviewers. I cornered her in the bathroom and asked her straight up not to give me the “practiced/pitched” answer but to lay the shit out there about the Company and how it would be to work there. Whether they were just sugaring us up – this was a very unorthodox interview.

She was so shocked, I remember her face like it was yesterday. Well sufficed to say we are both back in SA now and despite living at opposite ends of the country we always stay in touch.  It was her birthday on Friday and we’d been missing each other for a catch up chat for weeks already, it’s actually pretty bad, but life does have a habit of occasionally getting in the way. Well we had our catch up chat, about an hour and a half in all. It’s always so cathartic to speak to a close friend, to vent, to express, to share. I dunno, but it’s like “chicken soup for the soul” If anyone’s ever read the book, you’ll know what I mean. I needed it folks, I needed that pick me up.

The food day was also a bit of a fail, but this was mainly as I didn’t feel lus to cook (lus means in the mood/eager/looking forward to) here goes anyway –

Day 11 Food Diary

Water: 2l
Tea: 1 Cup Rooibos, milk, 1 brown sugar
Coffee 2 Cups, Milk, 1 brown sugar
Special Coffee 1 x Vanilla Latte

Breakfast: 40g All Bran Flakes
                     20g Peanuts
                     20g Raisins
                     100ml Full Cream Milk

Mid Morning Snack – None

Lunch: 100ml Yoghurt

Afternoon Snack – 50g Beef Drywors

Dinner: Tempura Prawns & Salad
No video for today, I made this last week, the only difference for today, is that I actually had olives. Unfortunately I also had the remaining 10 Maynard’s Fruit Pastilles. The packet is now finished and has been thrown out so no more distracting Temptation, don’t get me wrong, this little fopa still brings me in under the max calorie intake for the day – every day I aim for between 900-1200Cal, according to most dieticians the best calorie intake for women to lose weight is between 1200-1500Cal a day. Regardless, it still makes me feel like a weakling that I had to have those sweets, damn it man. I was doing so well, but I won’t let this throw me completely, we’ll regroup and start again, tomorrow is another day I guess..

Day 9 - Finding My Chi

When feeling down, I always turn to music, I find a jam that epitomizes what I’m feeling and if I can’t find one, I turn to songs that have something that resonates within me, whether it makes me nostalgic or just helps to get that hop back in my step –there’s always a song that can make things better!

For this week I have 2 Jams one is inspiring and drives my nostalgia, making me replay some really great times in my life and instilling that sense of wanting deep within me. The track that’s doing that for me right now is without a doubt : Lukas Graeme- 7 Years. Fuck me this song!!!!! If you haven’t heard it before please do yourself a favour and go listen to it here.

Okay now that your caught up, Lukas Graeme brings to the table what Gavin De Graw brought over a decade ago, there’s a story in his voice. A tortured soul, like many of us – life can be brutal and savage, it tests us, people betray us, our hearts get broken, we experience loss, and if in general, the smaller things don’t always go our way, but we gotta decide: To fall or to rise up? I guess that’s always the question.

This song makes me think about my life, love, friendships, work, family and goals and it awakens within in me the spirit of going forward, reaching up and just wanting to live life!

Song number 2 is the dance jam, now I have many, many, many songs from many genre’s that make me wanna break out into a two step, a little Klitse Klitse! For this week it’s gotta be JT man, Yo this guy – he never ceases to amaze me! I loved his early work with NSYNC (I am an 80’s child and was a Tween when he was in this boyband), I really enjoyed his colab with Black Eyed Peas in the early 2000’s for Where is the Love, after which his solo career continued to bring an array of awesome tracks. FUTURE LOVE SOUNDS – Yes Justin, you always bring Sexy back! JUSTIFIED was also good, THE 20/20 Experience – where honestly I only ever heard Mirrors get airplay in SA. I don’t know if I skipped any, but without a doubt the guy’s got talent. It will come as no surprise then, that this is my week’s dance jam:

Finding my “Chi" put a smile on my dial and I went for a 2km walk during my lunch break again. I was armed with some feel-good music on my phone, popped my headphones on and strolled down Main Str, Green Point, people probably thought “That bitch be crazy”. I was using the benches as step blocks, doing little jump ups and downs in between my power walk and yes during my dance jam, I danced baby! By the time I got back to the office, with 20min to spare no less, I felt back on top of the world and super motivated.

Gym was good, I did have to wait for a lane again but eventually got one, note to self, I wish my gym would get a sauna. Nothing like a good steam after a work out. I did the 80 laps I was shooting for 2km in distance, I can tell you though that yesterday's Pilates are with me today. I am feeling every single muscle in my ass and in my core. It burns eish! But I suppose that is a great thing, it means the muscles are working.

Day 8 & The infamous Ellen Tweet!!!!

I wish I could say this week has gone from Manic Monday to Terrible Tuesday and now finally that “hump day” has arrived Wonderful Wednesday, but alas I can not.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the “woe is me” type, but dang a person just wants a breather from the drama yo. can I get a hell yeah please.

Not being able to drink is becoming testier daily, a shot of Tequils or 6  (Tequila for those who think I miss–spelled I didn’t, it’s my slang again yo) would’ve come in nicely both yesterday and sure as fuck today.  With the ongoing drama I completely neglected to eat my breakfast or lunch – I know, I know, you should be eating small meals 4-6 times a day to keep the metabolism burning  - but in my defence I have been hearing good things about “intermittent fasting” so let’s chalk this one down to an intermittent fasting day.

From now on, I won’t be taking lunch on Wednesdays at the office, but instead I leave a little earlier, this is so I can make the final Pilates class of the day, it gives me a break from swimming and is a great way to get strong, toned and supple.

Oh my hat, I love Pilates, yes it was strenuous and I was already feeling the burn during and directly after class, but wowza you feel pain in muscles you didn’t even know you had! I love working with the resistance tubing and our instructor told us that they have a DIY tube trainor for pilates at Makro for R99.00 (roughly $6.50) so I will be going to get one soon. This is definitely exercise that I can see myself doing, because it’s fun – the same can be said for Tae-Bo and Zumba(which I have done and continue to do when the gym is too busy)

Before I get into my food diary for the day I need to go on a little rant : There has been a Twitter Blow Up of Note again today – This time it’s one of my personal fav female comedians under fire – Ellen Degeneres

The infamous tweet

The whole world is immediately jumping to conclusions and skewing the context of this joke – yes people it’s a joke.

People of colour have blasted her, calling her a racist – now come on people, who’s fault is it that the World’s fastest runner happens to be black??? This was purely Ellen making a joke about how awesome it would be to be able to be as fast as Usain or even better to have his speed when running errands – seriously people who likes running errands????

Instead haters are gonna hate and immediately the race card is being played!!! For fuck sakes, can we decide whether we want to be seen as equal human beings or not, because you can’t have it both ways. If we are all the same then the context is simple: 1 average running comedian on the back of the world fastest man – that is kak funny

Why bring oppression in? Secondly, has anyone thought to ask Mr. Bolt what he thinks, chances are he was flattered and probably found it funny too. In fact I know he did because guess what HATERS – He retweeted the original post.

The original photo of Bolt smiling while running went viral following his gold medal win in the 100-meter dash.

The comedian frequently posts photos of herself edited into topical moments and scenes from popular films and TV shows and you don’t see people jumping on their horses over that. My advice to all those who feel this post diminished them or marginalised them in any way – Seek professional help to get the chip of your damn shoulder, cause you have issues!!!

In summation, life’s too short to sweat the small stuff, don’t make mountains out of molehills. That is all – Rant now over.

I did my measuring and weigh in on the 1st day and have made a decision to only weigh myself and measure every 2 weeks so this update will only happen next week. Here’s my food day -

I leave you with these pearls of wisdom… Ciao Ciao

1 Week Down 11 to Go - Hopa!

Day 7 had arrived- could we say terrific Tuesday, unfortunately not, as the world is well aware ,women go through a very special cycle every month and this can and will affect your mood. Cravings galore and can even bring severe pain to some, I am the fucking latter. So my aunty with her Red Merc is currently visiting, because of this my day did not start well, being sleep deprived because of pain is never fun.

Traffic on the way to work was exceptionally slow, so by the time I reached the office my BS tolerance meter was already cranked to max volume, just to get there and not have any parking. Why did this send me barrelling over the edge, well simply put, when you pay for something you expect it! We pay for additional parking at the Protea Hotel and over the course of the last 3 months I’ve been living in Cape Town, they have had several conferences. Each time they have a conference, they don’t compensate for additional parking allowances and NEVER EVER ensure that their paying regular customers are taken care of!

In the words of  Peter Griffin(Family Guy) “ You know what really grinds my gears…” Well this shit is what grinds my gears. After a 15min battle with the parking security I finally managed to squeeze Betty(My Car – Why Betty? Well she’s Black is a beast has survived 7 Oppi’s and I love Ram Jam’s Black Betty – Bam ba lam) into a spot – no not a parking spot just parked in such a way that the conference goers could get out.

Sufficed to say I was not a happy bunny when I finally got into the office and started my work day. The day itself was very busy and to crown this madness we have some internal politics that’s been ongoing and was starting to negatively impact my personal relationship with a close friend. This is not something I wish on anyone and all I can say is that communication is always key. If ever you think something may be misinterpreted or taken personally. Just speak up and clear the air.

The day was so HEKATE that I didn’t even feel hungry so unfortunately I didn’t have my regular snacking and meals.

I did however go to gym, arriving at the gym a tad late as I had waited patiently for a colleague to come and collect their car keys – who never did. The pool was full of kids doing their lesson, the arbitrary wait ensued. I finally got a lane and was off, 80 laps in total.  I also tried something different and incorporated a little body board into my laps doing 10 laps legs only – boy oh boy did my ass feel the burn! Another 10 laps were spent doing arms only and you can definitely feel a difference in effort levels when not using both arms and legs. Tomorrow I know I’ll be stiff. Thankfully it’s going to be a break from swimming and I’ll be trying Pilates for the 1st time.

I couldn’t be in less of a mood for cooking so I opted for Stir Fry, quick, healthy and delicious. Please note people that I purely did the veg first because I was waiting on my meat to defrost. Typically you would start with the meat first.

Just another Manic Monday

#Day 6

It's just another manic Monday, I wish it was Sunday, cause that's my fun day, my I don't have to run day.... La La La I feel that sometimes you just have to sing through it. Music has always been a source of Soul Food and inspiration for me so I am very likely to have lyrical content and references in my writing.

As is the norm for a lot of us my Monday was a tad hectic, mine was starting out to be a perfect shade of BLUE, yes peeps you can sense the sarcasm just dripping off of that one right. Good, well the morning started normally, but I had borrowed my office keys to a colleague on Friday, obviously not expecting my other colleagues to be running late, but as lady luck would have it, there were massive train delays in Cape Town on Monday. This meant that I would have to sit and wait patiently outside my office, this wait turned out to be an hour! Thank fuck our WIFI signal is strong so at the very least I was able to crack on with my day and didn't have to sit there twiddling my thumbs. Unfortunately the fact that I now enjoy my first cup of Java at the office instead of at home(in an effort to finish 500ml of water before even setting foot in the office). I was caffeine deprived and in a less than sunny mood.

When my colleague eventually arrived, I virtually jetted into the kitchen and made my first cup. Small things can perk you up hey. Sufficed to say this rocky start to the day was only the beginning, the remainder of my day was filled with the general office type workload and to crown this gloriousness it ended with me having to battle with Providers and Insurers - never fun!

Can  I just say, I don't think I'm too difficult to get along with, but those that know me are fully aware that I have a low-tolerance for STUPIDITY! When people are put in positions that they are clearly incapable of doing I tend to lose my shit. When I am your client, you better know what your doing or pass the fucking phone to someone who does, or God help you the sea won't wash you clean. There is obviously a level of diplomacy that has to be maintained, nevertheless, I was faced with dealing with multiple idiots from various companies. By the time I left the office a Tequila or 6 was all I wanted, certainly not going to gym... Don't worry I didn't fail 6 days in. I did my little outward vent and woosa'd to my heart's content and then blasted the good jams on the way to gym.

Despite having a rest day on Sunday, I have to say I was rather stiff. Unfortunately I couldn't reach my 80 lap target and only did 75laps(1.875Km/1.165071), yes I can hear most of you cringing, why not just push for the last 5, because people at lap 65 I wanted to pass out and had pushed with everything in me to do a last 10. At that stage, there were also 2 people waiting to get a lane. I didn't want to half-ass another 5 laps at a snails pace, but rather opted for a few light stretches using the pilates tubes after my swim.

The day's meals were pretty good and I have to say I'm fairly impressed with myself thus far.

Breakfast: 1 Boiled Egg
                 6 Cherry Tomatoes
                 80ml Yoghurt

Mid Morning Snack - 1 Medium Apple

Lunch - 1/2 the green salad left over from Sunday night's
              100g tenderised Steak
20ml Sweet Chilli Sauce +10ml Soy Sauce
(I made the steak in the microwave at the office,  added the Soy and Sweet Chilli to the raw defrosted meat and let it marinade there till lunch time, I then simply popped it in the microwave for 2min and Bob's your Uncle)

Afternoon Snack - 30g Almonds

After the day I had the last thing I wanted to do was cook for long, so I chose to make a simple loved classic(this meal was always made by my mom, she didn't add mushroom and her dish was served with Macaroni)

Dinner - Creamy Chicken  & Veg

Ingredients:
100g Chicken Breast (Skinless & Deboned)
100g Brocolli
50g  Button Mushrooms

Sauce - 1/4 Packet of Cream of Chicken Soup +1/4 Packet of White Onion Soup
10-15ml Lemon Juice (Depending on how twangy you like your sauce, yes I said twangy
             not tangy)
             150ml Water
             25-30ml/g Mayo
